Fl├Âtenuhrst├╝cke Hob XIX: a selection of pieces for mechanical flute clock, Joseph Haydn (1732—1809)

The mechanical clock was an early way of recording music and playing it back. There is an amazing collection of such instruments in the Utrecht museum of mechanical instruments (the Museum Speelklok — a ‘speelklok’ is a mechanical musical clock.)

Haydn wrote a selection of original pieces for this curious instrument, and for us the pieces now demonstrate, in the same way that the piano rolls of a later generation did, details of how the composer wanted his notes and ornaments to be played.
