Spires Philharmonic Chorus is about 50 strong and performs choral repertoire with
a balance of known and less well-known music, mostly in the “classical” tradition.
Recent examples include Ethel Smyth’s Mass in D, Mozart’s Great Mass, Haydn’s
Creation and Amy Beach’s Mass in E flat. At least twice a year, in April and November,
the chorus combines with our orchestra to perform either a major work or a selection
of interesting and exciting music.

Our summer programme is varied – a concert, or choral workshop or one of our
popular summer picnics. There is also an annual Play and Sing Day for both chorus
and orchestra with an open invitation to anyone who would like to join us for the
day.

Spires Philharmonic Orchestra is a full classical orchestra of musicians who travel
from different parts of the Midlands to rehearse and play in our concerts twice or
three times a year, conducted by Jack Lovell-Huckle. We hold an Orchestra Play
Day each September and invite other instrumentalists to join us for an in-depth study
of an orchestral piece.

Rehearsals are held at West Orchard United Reformed Church, Baginton Rd,
Coventry, CV3 6FP - a comfortable and attractive venue with great acoustics, easy
parking and good access.

Chorus rehearsals: Wednesday evenings, 7:15pm - 9:30pm.
There are usually ten rehearsals for each concert.

Orchestra rehearsals: Thursday evenings, 7:00pm -10:00pm with five
rehearsals in the few weeks before the concert.

Our Music Director and Conductor is Jack Lovell-Huckle who leads our rehearsals and concerts. Jack also leads orchestras, choirs and opera companies across the Midlands, the North and Wales. In addition to his position here at Spires Music, Jack is an Assistant Conductor with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Music Director at Stafford Sinfonia, Opera Ddraig in Cardiff and Birmingham Gay Symphony Orchestra.

Subscriptions:

Chorus: £40 per concert and set of 10 rehearsals;

Orchestra: £20 per concert and set of 5 rehearsals.

We are always looking for new members - do join our rehearsals for a few weeks to
see how you like us.

For the Chorus, experience of reading music would be helpful.
For the Orchestra, you will be expected to be an accomplished orchestral player
performing to a high standard and committed to attending the reduced rehearsal
schedule. We welcome applications from members of every section of the orchestra
but particularly strings and brass.
